Abstract
1,031,718. Orrerics. J. P. JOHNSON, and G. R. LEVITT. March 11, 1963 [March 20, 1962], No. 10693/62. Heading G5G. An orrery comprises a globe 3 mounted on a shaft 5 for rotation about its geographical axis 4 which is inclined at 23¢ degrees with respect to a second axis 6 passing through the globe and shaft 5, which is mounted freely in one end of an arm 1 and carrying a sprocket wheel 10 coupled by an endless chain 12 to a second fixed sprocket wheel 11 so that when the arm 1 is moved with the globe 3 in an orbit around a third axis 9 the globe completes one revolution about the second axis 6. One complete orbit of the arm 1 around the axis 9 represents one gear and various angular positions along the orbit may be identified in terms of months by a calibrated disc 16 secured to the shaft 5 and which is concealed in a cover 17 having a window 18 so that only the appropriate month is exposed to view. A source of light 14 passing through the axis 9 is mounted on the arm 1 and arranged to throw a horizontal beam of light 15 towards the centre 8 of the globe. A suitable drive may be provided for driving the arm 1 around the third axis 9 and a further drive may be taken from this for rotating the globe around the geometrical axis. A space, representing the moon, may be mounted for rotation in an orbit about the globe.
