Abstract

[Also in Division A1] Fruit sucked from the ground by hoses 30 is passed to a container 32, and when a predetermined quantity of fruit is present in the container its base 33 will pivotally open against the action of the pressure difference and the weight of the counterweights to allow the fruit to fall into a skip 41. The suction is induced by a fan 13 driven directly from tractor 11, and it can be varied by a valve 40, by pivoting slats of a grill 27, or by varying the speed of the fan. Leaves, twigs &c. sucked up with the fruit pass through the grill and are discharged by the fan. A shroud may be placed over the fan outlet and may be connected to a second hose 46 (Fig. 6, not shown), associated with a hose 30 to provide a recirculatory air flow. The hoses may be excited by vibrators to prevent fruit jamming therein, and insecticide may be introduced to the inlet side of the fan from a tank 47. The fan may be driven by an independent engine.
