Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1031368/C2/1> (wherein R represents a 2-hexyl, 2-heptyl, 2-octyl or n-butyl radical) and their acid addition salts are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1031368/C2/2> (wherein X represents an araliphatic radical removable by hydrogenolysis) with n-butyl methyl ketone, n-amyl methyl ketone, n-hexyl methyl ketone or n-butyraldehyde, reducing the product with lithium aluminium hydride and liberating the phenolic hydroxy groups by subsequent catalytic hydrogenation, optionally followed by acid addition salt formation in cases where a salt is not obtained directly. The preparation of the starting material in which X represents a benzyl radical from the corresponding nitroethanol is described. The 2-hexyl, 2-heptyl and 2-octyl compounds are bronchodilators and the n-butyl compounds may be used in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases; these compounds may be administered orally, by injection or by inhalation in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them together with a carrier.
