Abstract

1,030,515. Feather meal feed supplement. J. M. DOCKEN. May 13, 1963 [May 18, 1962], No. 18886/63. Heading A2B. A continuous method of converting wet poultry feathers into a proteinaceous feed meal comprises the steps of grinding the feathers in a grinder 12, feeding the ground feathers by means of a rotary vane-type pump 18 into one end of a heated treatment chamber system, 24 and 38, agitating and propelling the feathers towards the other end of the chamber system, employing a multiple ribbon conveyer 48a, 48b in chamber 24 and a cut-flight conveyer screw with paddles 54 in chamber 38, and subjecting the feathers to treatment by steam, and then removing the resultant meal material from the other end of the system by means of a second rotary vane-type pump 42, the speed of which is coordinated to a ratio of two-thirds the speed of the feeding pump 18. The chambers are heated by electric resistance elements 58 and 60, and the two rotary vane-type pumps prevent loss of steam pressure from the chamber system. The meal material finally is dried in a dryer 44.
