Abstract
1,029,495. Wrapping-machines. FRANKLIN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. March 6, 1964, No. 9710/64. Heading B8C. [Also in Divisions B4 and B6] Articles, e.g. trays, carrying food, are supplied on a plate 26 by a pusher conveyer 23. to a lift 66 on which they are raised to a position where they are transferred by a rack 82, together with the end portion of a wrapper film 166, Figs. 2-3 (not shown), on to a second lift 67 which is raised to the level of a plate 123 at which the wrapper is tack-sealed before being cut from the web (see Division B4). Final sealing is effected before the article is removed on a conveyer belt 56. The lifts 66, 67 are pivotally supported by two pairs of pivoted bars 68, 69 and are cam-operated. A switch 73c operates to stop the main drive if an article jams the lifts. As an article is pushed on to the lift 67 by the rack 82, it engages a floating member 100 slidable in the grooved surface of the lift 67. The rack 82 is retracted and the lifts 66, 67 vertically displaced. Fig. 5 (not shown). The film 166 engages the underside of a dancer bar 147, thereby folding itself round the top and one side of the article as the lift 67 rises. A second rack 98 has a foot 100a which engages the member 100 to eject the partially wrapped article on to the plate 123. A heater 124 tack-seals the film under the article before a reciprocable knife 109 is camoperated against a fixed blade 111 to cut the film. A pair of arms 122 carried on chains 117 move the package past ploughs 128 which fold its ends. As the package passes between heaters 127 which seal its ends and over a heater 126, a shoe 140 is cam-operated to press the package downwards. If the ends of the film are long enough to be turned under the package, the heater 126 both seals them and secures them to the underside of the package. The arms 122 then move the completed package on to the discharge conveyer 56. An adjusting mechanism 256 enables guide rails 255 to accommodate articles of varying length. A stop 257 switches off the machine if an article is too high. As an article is pushed against the web of film 166 and on to the lift 67, the pull on the web pivots an arm 226, thereby causing a roller 175 to feed the web forward (see Division B6).
