Abstract

Sheets of glass are supported during treatment, e.g. in an annealing lehr, on a cushion of gas and the depth of the cushion is maintained by controlling the upward escape of gas at the sides of the cushion. This is effected by the use of battens 9, 10 which are adjustable to vary the width of the gap between them and the edges of the glass sheet. The current of gas can be heated to assist in the treatment and a supplementary gas cushion may be provided <FORM:1029305/C1/1> above the sheet to assist in maintaining the sheet at the correct height; alternatively, a suction may be applied above the glass sheet to draw off heated gas for recirculation. Pusher fingers 16 on endless chains may be provided for moving the sheets, or the legs supporting the treatment chamber at the exit end can be made shorter than those at the inlet end to provide a declivity towards the exit.
