Abstract

Aqueous formaldehyde is stabilized by admixing therewith (a) a compound <FORM:1029039/C2/1> where R is alkyl or aryl, (b) a methylolated derivative of (a), (c) a condensate of (a) with an aldehyde or (d) a mixture of two or more of (a), (b), and (c). Compounds specified include benzo-, aceto-, propio- and butyro-guanamine, their methylolated derivates, and condensates with formaldehyde, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde, and adipaldehyde. Other stabilizing agents may also be added including an ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a C16-18 fatty acid, an ether or acetal of a polyhydric alcohol, hydroquinone, a C7-10 alcohol, and polyvinyl alcohol or acetate. Examples of these are pentaerythritol oleate, stearate, and monoformal, polyethyleneglycol stearate and lauryl ether, polyvinyl formal, heptanol, octanol, decanol, sorbitan monooleate and monopalmitate and sorbitol trismethylene ether.
