Abstract

1,028,672. Screw and nut gearing; overload release clutches. H. KORTHAUS, and R. WILKE. Feb. 7, 1963, No. 5042/63. Headings F2C and F2Q. [Also in Division H2] An overload clutch is associated with an electric motor which is used in mechanisms having limited travel, i.e. to open or shut valves, gates and the like, and is operative for either direction of rotation both to disconnect the drive and to switch off the motor. Motor rotor 12 is mounted on hollow shaft 13 which can move axially, relative to the output shaft, due to screw 15 and nut 16, to operate limit switches 36, 37 and is also rotatally connected to the output shaft 14 through the overload clutch device. The overload clutch comprises two identical assemblies each operative in one direction of rotation by the provision of jamming roller clutches 18, 19. Clutch plate members 20, 21 are urged against friction discs 29, 30 attached to members 31, 32 by springs 26 which bear on pressure plates 23, 24. Members 31, 32 are coupled together by studs 34 and member 32 is rigidly connected to output shaft 14. The two halves of the clutch are rotatably separated by thrust bearing 22 housed between the two pressure plates. In operation when the output shaft 14 is suddenly braked the driving clutch will slip and allow the hollow shaft carrying the rotor to screw along the stationary output shaft until the limit switch is opened to switch off the motor, the driving clutch will also be axially moved and thus mechanically disconnect the drive. Due to friction in the screw, the hollow shaft will remain axially displaced and the motor can only be started in the opposite direction when it will run to the opposite limit of travel of the driven member at which point the hollow shaft will move in the opposite axial direction, thus disconnecting the other clutch and operating the other limit switch. In a modification, for use in a wire or thread coiling drive, the screw-and-nut are designed to be friction free so that the strength of the springs used in the clutch can not only determine the maximum torque obtained but also act to return the hollow shaft to the running position so that intermittent switching in the same direction of rotation can be obtained. The output shaft may be turned manually by means of nut 38 provided on the shaft.
