Abstract

1,028,649. Disc brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATUBENFABRIK KOMM. GES.]. Aug. 26, 1964 [Sept. 4, 1963], No. 34928/64. Heading F2E. In a spot-type disc brake an actuating lever 8 is adapted to be turned to engage a thrust member 9 by way of an helically rising slideway 17 formed on the shaft 14 of the actuating lever 8 and a slideway 18 on the thrust member 9 to move the latter axially in the brake casing 3 against a screwed connection 10, 11 to actuate a brake pad 36 against a rotating disc 1 and, by reaction, apply another brake pad 7 against the other surface of the brake disc. An automatic adjusting mechanism is provided to adjust for wear of the friction pads and consists of a ratchet-wheel 26 rotatable with the shaft 14 and a spring member 30 engages at one end with the inner screwed connection 11 and at the outer end engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel 26 so that when the ratchet wheel is rotated the spring member 30 runs up the inclined backs of the ratchet teeth and if the wear of the friction pads is sufficient, the spring member 30 jumps over the top of the teeth 28 into the next tooth space to take out the wear. The thrust member is non-positively connected with the screwthreaded member 11 through a friction bush 21. In operation, to apply the brake the operating lever 8 is pivoted so that the surfaces 17, 18 run up on one another and the thrust member 9 moves towards the screw-threaded connection 10, 11. Since the thrust member 9 is guided in splining 22 of the brake casing 3 it cannot rotate but just moves axially. Under a braking pressure the screw-threaded connection 10, 11 is self-locking and since the screw 23 prevents the outer screw-threaded element 10 from rotating the screw-threaded connection 10, 11 moves axially through the carrier 35 of the brake friction pad 36 in the direction of the brake disc 1. The collar 15 of the operating lever shaft 14 is pressed against the screw-threaded cover 13 and acts via the brake casing to move the brake friction pad 7 to the right and against the disc 1.
