Abstract

1,028,453. Power-assisted steering mechanisms. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 26, 1965 [March 13, 1964], No. 10609/64. Heading B7H. A servo cylinder 8 providing power-assistance in a vehicle having rack-and-pinion steering mechanism is pivotally mounted in the vehicle frame by means of a ball joint 20 with its piston 10 connected by a ball joint 13 to an arm 3A on the mounting of one steerable wheel. A control valve 18 responsive to movement of a steering wheel 19 is supplied with oil from an engine-driven pump 14 through a pipe 15 and communicates through flexible pipes 16A, 17A with the cylinder 8. A rack housing 4 having mounting lugs 5 contains a rack connected by ball-jointed tie-rods 2 to steering arms 3. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the cylinder 8 is rigidly attached to the vehicle frame by a bracket, and the piston 10 is connected to the arm 3A by a rod having ball joints at both ends.
