Abstract

1,028,367. Respiratory appliances. PYE Ltd. Oct. 13, 1964 [Oct. 15, 1963], No. 40548/63. Heading A5T. A volume cycled medical ventilator comprises a bellows to be connected to a gas supply and a changeover mechanism (operated by a certain degree of expansion of the bellows) which opens a valve for gas to flow from the bellows for inspiration, the changeover mechanism also being arranged (on a certain contraction of the bellows) to close the valve to allow expiration to take place. As shown, the bellows 1 at the end of the expiration phase, are expanding and by moving the arm 3 about a pivot 4 are about to actuate the changeover mechanism 9 through a pin 29, an adjustable wedge 30, and a pin 28. The rocker arm 20 then moves so that it is held by the magnets 24, 26 and a rod 6D opens the inspiration valve 6A and closes the expiration valve 6B. Gas from the bellows then passes via an adjustable constrictor 10 to the patient. The resulting contraction of the bellows finally actuates the changeover mechanism through a pin 31 and the rocker arm is held by the magnets 23, 25. The inspiration valve then closes, the expiration valve opens, and the patient exhales through a vent 8. The ventilator also includes a magnetic pressure relief valve 12 in which is a signal whistle, and a source of suction may be applied to the vent 8 for an induced exhalation phase. Springs 27, 33, control the action of the changeover mechanism and movement of the wedge 30 controls the volume of inspiration gas. Extreme movement of the wedge permits the apparatus to be used for manual operation.
