Abstract

[Also in Divisions A3 and B4] A method of producing pre-finished outsoles for shoes or shoe bottom units is characterized in that a plurality of sole blanks S are superposed one upon another and held together by means of clamping plates 10, 11 and whilst so held are together subjected to an edge trimming operation by means of a grinding tool 13 to produce the required edge contour on the blanks and afterwards to an inking operation to produce the required finished edge on the blanks. Between the trimming and inking operations, the sole blanks are preferably subjected to a brushing operation to remove any loose particles from their edges. Preferably, the stack of sole blanks consists of an even number of blanks with right and left opposite ways up and the sole blanks disposed outermost in the stack have their finished faces directed inwardly of the stack. The trimming operation may be performed by means of the copy grinding apparatus described in Specification 1,008,081 and the inking operation by means of the apparatus described in Specification 1,028,313.
