Abstract

1,028,060. Frequency and phase discriminators; measuring speed by sound waves. BENDIX CORPORATION. Nov. 23, 1964 [Dec. 13, 1963], No. 47612/64. Headings H3A and H4D. Doppler frequency shift in a carrier frequency pulse is measured by applying the pulse over a frequency sensitive phase shift network 15 and also directly (without delay) to a bi-stable phase detector 32-35 whose D.C. output, smoothed, indicates the frequency shift. The bi-stable circuit comprises a pair of crosscoupled PNP transistors 34, 35 and a pair of cross-coupled NPN transistors 32, 33, the emitters of each pair being connected to equal positive and negative voltage supplies 41, 40 and corresponding collectors of each pair being directly connected. Zero phase shift from the phase shift network 15 results in oppositetype transistors 31, 30 being conductive during alternate half-cycles and actuating the bistable circuit so that a symmetrical square wave is produced from the common collector junction of transistors 35, 33, but changes of phase with frequency cause the conduction interval of transistors 35, 33 to vary oppositely so that an average D.C. output results of magnitude and polarity, indicating the magnitude and sense of the carrier frequency shift, e.g. on an oscilloscope and the duration of the applied carrier pulse may also be indicated. The phase shift network 15 may comprise ten sections having in the series arms an inductor L 1k and capacitor C 1k series resonant at the discriminator centre frequency f 0 and in the shunt arms a capacitor C 2k and inductor L 2k parallel resonant at the same frequency f 0 , the arrangement forming a constant - K filter with zero attenuation over a pass-band covering the maximum and minimum frequency deviation and a linear phase-shift over this band; but with the resultant total delay less than the pulse duration. The Doppler pulses may also indicate information by their width. The invention is applied to a sonar system.
