Abstract

1,027,739. Flushing water closets. J. H. SCHMID. June 12, 1963, No. 23404/63. Heading E1C. A flushing mechanism for a water closet 10 comprises a flush valve 19, 20, 21 (Figs. 1 and 2), a flow path for flush water from a tank 12 through the said valve, when actuated to a closet 10, comprising a tubular body 11 to connect the valve to the closet 10, and a back-flow preventer 17, 18 therein comprising a flap 17 to close the flow path when the pressure on the upstream side of the preventer 17, 18 is below a predetermined value to prevent flow from the closet 10 to the tank 12. There is an opening 30<SP>1</SP>, adjacent to the flap 17, in the side of the body 11, to which is attached a cup 30, connected to the closet 10 by the opening 30<SP>1</SP> when the pressure is below the predetermined value. The flap 17 normally closes the opening 30<SP>1</SP> and the cup 30 is open to atmosphere. The flush tank is attached to the flush valve 19, 20, 21 at the bottom 29. For flushing the valve 19, 20, 21 is operated by means of a handle 23 of the actuating rod 24 against which rests the stem 22 of the valve member 21. Supported at the bottom of the tank 12 is a flexible hose 13, which extends to the top, connecting the interior to atmosphere and to the downstream side of the valve 19, 20, 21, so that air enters the tank 12 at a check valve 27 when the tank is emptied and escapes therefrom in filling, the valve 27 preventing outflow of liquid but allowing air to flow in. In a modification (Fig. 6) a handle 123 of a rod 124 is actuated for a member 125 to move an arm 125<SP>1</SP> to lift a valve member 121 on which is a backing member 120 hingedly connected to a valve body 111 at 147. The valve member 121 will be fully opened by the velocity of the water and will be closed by gravity when the tank has emptied. In the form shown in Fig. 8 a handle 223, associated with rods 224, 225 actuates a valve member 227 closing the opening through a tube 219, extending from the chamber below a cover 236 to below a valve washer 265 on the underside of a disc 264, sealing the outlet entrance at 266. Pressure in the said chamber is thus reduced so that water from the tank 12 forces the piston 250 upward to lift the washer 265 to open the said entrance 266 to give a flush. When this is completed the washer 265 and the member 227 drop to their sealing positions, and water flows through an orifice 248 to fill the said chamber and then into the tank 12. In a final form (Fig. 12) a handle has a control rod which engages a bar 322 abutting a flap 307 to open it by pivoting at 308 for flushing. The velocity of the water forces it fully open, when the top thereof is caught by the latch 332 and held open. When flushing is completed a float 337 in a space 336 (now drained by a port 338), which has previously risen with entry of water drops so that the latch 332 is unlatched and the flap 307 falls to the closed position. The tank 12 is connected to the supply line at 316 by way of a controller 317 which allows flow into the tank until the pressure builds up to a predetermined value and then stops the flow.
