Abstract
1,027,511. Variable-speed friction gear. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. April 2, 1964 [April 10, 1963], No. 14283/63. Heading F2D. In a toric-disc variable-speed friction gear comprising tiltable rollers 36 rotatable on fixed support arms 33 and engaging spaced toric discs 17, 28 respectively secured to coaxial input and output shafts 12, 27, the tilt of the rollers 36 is varied by spring-returned centrifugal weights 47 pivoted on a spider 24 secured to the input shaft so that with varying input speed the output speed remains substantially constant. The disc 17 is secured to a ring 16 splined to the input shaft 12 and to a plate 18 having pressed-up protuberances 19 engaging complementary recesses in the back of the disc 17. The plate 18 is made rotatable with, but axially slidable with respect to, the spider 24 by a slot 22 in a plate flange engaging spider fingers 23. The plate 18 and the spider 24 are urged apart by dished springs 26. A gear-enclosing housing 30 is secured to both the output shaft 27 and the disc 28, pressedup housing protuberances 31 engaging complementary recesses 32 in the disc. A plate 38 and the housing 30 form a grooved pulley for a drive belt 39. The rollers 36 are journalled on cylindrically bored members 35 engaging balls 34 and secured to the arms 33 which are secured to a sleeve 10 fixed to a mounting plate 11. Noses 49 on the weights 47 engage slots 50 in fingers 44 extending through arcuate slots 45 in the spider 24 from a sleeve 43. Inclined parallel flaps 41 connected to the sleeve 43 engage pairs of lugs 42 secured to the member 35, so that axial movement of the sleeve 43 by the weights results in variation of the tilt of the rollers.
