Cooling air.-In a system for cooling air in deep or hot mines, cold surface-water from a well or stream 4 circulates, mainly by gravity, through flow and return pipes 3, 6 arranged in the pit shaft, and, by means of an interchanger 5, cools water circulating under a comparatively low pressure through sectional mains 12, 11 and branches 10, 13, interchangers 14 being arranged in the branches near the working faces to cool air. In this way, heavy piping is necessary only for the main circulation through the pipes 3, 6. The flow is assisted, if necessary, by a pump 8 in the main 3 and a pump 15 in the section 11. In a modification, the main circulation extends only partly down the shaft, where an interchanger is arranged to cool water circulating through the lower part of the shaft. Existing pipe systems may be utilized for the water circulation.
