Abstract

A copolymer comprising units of formula <F\1> where R is H, alkyl or alkenyl and R is H, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl aryl or a chlorine or oxygen containing group is prepared from <F\2> and an olefin oxide of formula <F\3> in the presence of an ionic initiator. The polymerization process may be carried out in bulk, solution or suspension at from -100 DEG to + 150 DEG C. The monomers may be added simultaneously or alternately to give a random copolymer or a block copolymer. 10-1-10-6 moles of initiator may be used per mole of monomers. The quantity of water present should not equal or exceed 0.1 mole per cent. The product may have a molecular weight of a few thousand or 100,000 or more. Lactones specified are b -propiolactone, and those derived from a ,a -dimethyl - b - hydroxypropionic acid, b - hydroxy-butyric acid, b -hydroxyisobutyric acid, b -hydroxy - b - vinyl - propionic acid, 3 - hydroxy-hex - 4 - enoic acid and mixtures thereof. Olefin oxides specified are: ethylene oxide, 1- and 2-butylene oxides, styrene oxide, cyclohexene oxide, 2,3-epoxy-propionaldehyde, butadiene monoxide, vinyl cyclo-hexene oxide, phenyl glycidyl ether and epichlorohydrin and mixtures of these with the diglycidyl ether of diphenylol propane, isoprene dioxide and diglycidyl ether. Initiators specified are: Na, K, zinc diisopropyl, naphthalenic sodium, butyl lithium, aluminium triethyl, diethyl aluminium chloride, diethyl aluminium ethoxide, chromium oxide, molybdenum oxide, CF3COOH, BF3 and its dietherate, AlCl3, acetyl perchlorate and CF3COOH/AlCl3. Solvents specified are: dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, toluene dinitrobenzene and ethylene glycol dimethyl ether. In the examples the reaction is carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere, quenched by addition of chloroform and the product precipitated by adding diethyl ether.
