Abstract

Fire-retardant fibreboard comprises fibres consisting only of synthetic ceramic fibres, clay, in the proportion of 10 to 30 parts by weight per 100 parts of fibres, and a particulate binder, and is made by dewatering through a screen a flocculated slurry and drying the resulting mat without firing it. The binder may be starch grains, which may be gelatinised in the wet mat before drying. The slurry may be flocculated just before it is dewatered, e.g. by adding polyacrylamide to the headbox of a Fourdrinier machine. In the examples, the fibres are of white slag wool, and the slurry also contains size and calcium chloride.
