Abstract

The invention relates to bis(b -hydroxyethyl)-hexahydroterephthalate and to its preparation by hydrogenating bis(b - hydroxyethyl)terephthalate in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal having an atomic number of at least 28. Preferably, the hydrogenation is effected in an aqueous medium at 40-80 DEG C. under a pressure of 50-500 lb. per square inch. However, the hydrogenation may also be effected without a solvent or in the presence of preformed product or in an organic solvent. The catalyst may be used as such or on a support, preferably carbon, and is preferably ruthenium, palladium, platinum or rhodium. Examples are given. The product is useful in the manufacture of condensation polymers (see Division C3).ALSO:Bis - (b - hydroxyethyl) hexahydroterephthalate (see Division C2) is used in the manufacture of condensation polymers containing hexahydroterephthalate units. The compound may be used alone or in association with other compounds capable of polycondensation to a polyester. In a comparative example, copolymers are prepared from (a) bis-(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate and dimethyl hexahydroterephthalate and (b) bis-(hydroxyethyl) hexahydroterephthalate and bis-(hydroxyethyl)-terephthate; in each case the reaction is effected at 215 DEG C. in the presence of antimony trioxide under a pressure which is gradually reduced from atmospheric to about 1 mm.
