Abstract

1,026,465. Filters. WALKER MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 24, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No. 3015/63. Heading B1D. A filter element 12 threadedly connected to a base element 14 with a gasket 30 therebetween adapted to be compressed when said elements are properly assembled, includes a torque indicator located on one of the elements, the torque indicator including a circular pattern on one of said elements, said pattern having corresponding indicia located diametrically opposite one another to indicate visually the extent to which the filter element must be rotated, after initial contact between said gasket and the elements, to accomplish the final tightening of the filter element on to the base element. As shown, the torque indicator comprises repetitive sets of indicia 40, 42 (shown developed in Fig. 4) extending circumferentially around the filter element and so arranged that corresponding indicia are located diametrically opposite one another, whereby after initial contact between said gasket and said elements has been made, the position of one of said indicia may be visually noted to serve as an index point and then the filter element is rotated a final one half turn until the opposite corresponding indicium appears at the index point, thereby indicating that the proper attachment of the filter element to the base is complete. Thus if the mark A of set 40 is uppermost after initial contact, the filter may be rotated until the mark A of set 42 is uppermost. As the two marks are 180 degrees apart on the filter shell 16, this indicates completion of a rotation of one half turn. An index point may be provided on the base if desired. Alternatively, the indicia may be applied to the base with an index point on the filter element. A by-pass valve 38 is provided on the base 14.
