[Also in Divisions B1 and F1] An automatic diluting apparatus comprises a conduit system having operably connected thereto two vessels the volume of each being controllably variable and both of which are filled with a fluid diluent, a predetermined quantity of a fluid concentrate being introduced into the conduit system by increasing the volume of one of the vessels by a predetermined amount, whence a known volume of fluid diluent is discharged by controlled alteration of the volume of the other vessel, said discharge fluid also carrying with it the said quantity of fluid concentrate. In a specific embodiment of the apparatus, Fig. 1, diluent under pressure is fed through tube 55 to valve 66 and hence into cylinder 30 via tube 45, to move the piston 38 between stops 40 and 44 and thus displace a predetermined volume of diluent through tube 47; this volume may be varied by adjusting the size of the piston or the stops. The apparatus is filled with diluent and the sampling nozzle 58 placed in a vessel 65 containing concentrate, a predetermined quantity of which is drawn up into tube 58 by controllably withdrawing the plunger 122 located in vessel 72 which is joined to tube 60. When the concentrate has been taken up, the vessel 65 is replaced by a clean vessel and the nozzle 58 wiped free of sample. The valve 66 is then rotated through 90 degrees and due to pressure from 55 on piston 38, the diluent in cylinder 30 is displaced through tubes 45 and 60, thus displacing the concentrate into the clean vessel and also diluting it to a known degree.
