Abstract
A method of preparing diallyl phthalate comprises dispersing finely divided disodium phthalate in an inert diluent, e.g. xylene, o-dichlorobenzene, or diallyl phthalate itself which has a boiling point between 130 DEG and 300 DEG C., is immiscible with water and miscible with diallyl phthalate in all proportions, boiling the dispersion under reflux in the-presence of a catalyst consisting of a tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt while slowly adding an allyl halide, e.g. chloride. The dispersion of the finely divided disodium phthalate may be prepared in situ in the inert diluent by the reaction of phthalic acid or phthalic anhydride with sodium carbonate at an elevated temperature in the solvent.
