Abstract
Amino-1,3,5-triazines having at least two amino groups, substituted or unsubstituted, and at least two replaceable hydrogen atoms attached to the total of the amino nitrogen atoms present, are oxyalkylated by admixing at a temperature of from 75 DEG to 175 DEG C. said triazine and an alkylene or cycloalkylene oxide, optionally substituted by non-interfering substituents such as hydroxyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, in a molar ratio of 1 : 2 to 1 : 125 in the presence of a basic catalyst and a solvent containing dimethyl sulphoxide in an amount of from 5 to 100% by weight of the total solvent portion. Suitable 4,6 - diamino - 1,3,5 - triazine starting materials may be prepared in situ by admixing cyanoguanidine and nitriles such as acetonitrile, n-butyronitrile, iso-butyronitrile, benzonitrile, propionitrile, phenylacetonitrile, succinonitrile, trichloroacetonitrile and adiponitrile in the presence of a basic catalyst and a solvent containing the proportions of dimethyl sulphoxide specified above.
