Abstract

1,025,403. Making waveguides; jointing. FELTEN & GUILLEAUME CARLSWERK A.G. April 5, 1963 [June 16, 1962], No. 13600/63. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division H1] A waveguide is made from a laminate which includes a layer of honeycomb construction. As shown, a metallic base-plate 1, Fig. 2, of, e.g. copper or aluminium, is cut to a width equal to the linear development of the waveguide profile plus marginal strips 6a, 6b. A layer 2 of metal in the form of a honeycomb is attached by adhesive to the conductive base-plate, a margin 6c being left at either extremity of the section. A metal cover-plate 3 is then attached by adhesive to the honeycomb layer and slits 4 made in the cover-plate and honeycomb layer at positions corresponding to the corners of the waveguide. Finally, the base-plate 1 is bent around the former 5 and the strips 6a, 6b attached to each other, e.g. by adhesive. A flange 9, 10, 11, Fig. 5, consists of a part 10 provided with a collar 9 which fits over and is attached to the outer layer 3. A conductive part 11 is attached to the part 10, e.g. by screws, rivets, soldering, welding or cementing, and also to the margins 6c at the ends of the inner conductive layer 1. The corners of the guide are reinforced with metallic or plastic L-sections 7 which are either cemented in position or held in position by blocks 8 arranged under the collars 9. In an alternative method of construction, U-shaped metallic strips 13, Fig. 7, are cemented into the honeycomb structure at positions corresponding to the corners of the waveguide, i.e. filling the slits 4 shown in Fig. 2. This is done whilst the material is in the form of stacked strips partly cemented together and before the strips are expanded to form a honeycomb. When the inner plate 1 is bent around the former, the U-shaped strips open out to form L-section comer members.
