Abstract

Elements are incorporated into the UO2 crystal lattice by contacting pulverulent or granular uranium trioxide dihydrate or ammonium uranate with a solution containing the desired other elements in the form of ions, separating the solution from the solid after the contact, drying the separated solid and reducing with hydrogen. The contacting may be effected by agitation of a mixture of the two phases, or by passing the solution through a bed of the solid. The solution is preferably at a pH of at least 4 and at a temperature of 10-80 DEG C., and the contacting time is preferably 1 to 12 hours. Examples of elements that may be incorporated are trivalent or pentavalent elements having a maximum effective cross-section for neutron capture of two barns, e.g. Y, Nb, or modifying the semiconductor properties, e.g. Ce; ions or rare earths having an effective cross-section of at least 50 barns, e.g. B, La, Eu; other fissionable element, e.g. Pu.
