Abstract

Machining fluids, for use as a lubricant and coolant during metal machining operations, comprise an emulsion of one or more glycerides containing both acetyl and higher fatty acyl groups in a ratio of more than 1:1. Preferably the glycerides contain two aceyl and one higher acyl group per molecule. The emulsion may be of the water-in-oil or oil-in water type, and may contain any of the following emulsifying agents: alkyl sulphates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, polyoxyethylene sorbitan, higher fatty alcohol ethers, and polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene copolymers, and combinations thereof with sorbitan esters, monoglycerides, or propylene glycol esters. A bactericide may also be present, e.g. hexachlorophene, methyl para-hydroxy benzoate, alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, sodium trichlorophenate, orthophenyl phenol, hexyl resorcinol, or tris-(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane. A mixture of NaNO2ALSO:Water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions wherein the oil is a glyceride or mixture of glycerides containing both acetyl and higher fatty acyl groups in a ratio of more than 1 : 1, are used as machining fluids. Any of the following emulsifiers may be present:- alkyl sulphates, alkyl asyl sulphonates, polyoxyethylene sorbitan, higher fatty alcohol ethers, and polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene copolymers, and combinations thereof with sorbitan esters, monoglycerides, or propylene glycol esters. A mixture of NaNO2 and NaNO3 may be present as a rust inhibitor, and any of several specified bactericides may also be present.
