Abstract
Alumina gel having mercury pore volume of 2.0-2.7 cc./g., a nitrogen pore volume of 0.6-1.33 rec./g. and compacted density 15-25 lb./cu. ft. is prepared by adding sodium carbonate solution to a solution of an aluminium salt, e.g. chloride, nitrate or sulphate, the NaO2: Al2O3 weight ratio being from 1.4: 1 to 2: 1, to produce a slurry of pH 5.7-6.0, spray-drying to produce a product of pH 4.5-7.0, washing and drying. The pH may be controlled by varying the amounts of sodium carbonate or by addition of sodium salts or free acids to the solution. The aluminium salt solution contains e.g. 65-100 g./l. of Al2O3. The sodium content of the product is below 0.05%. Washing may be with solutions previously heated to 49 DEG C. and consists of first four washes with 2 DEG B<\>ae ammonium sulphate solution, then one was with decationized water adjusted with ammonia to pH 9.5 and finally 4 washed with ammonia solution of pH 9.0-9.2. The washes product is flash-dried in beds 15 inches x 13 inches x 1/2 inch at 400 DEG C.
