Abstract

Trioxane is copolymerized with trithiane or a substituted trithiane. The polymerization may take place in the presence of boron fluoride or a complex thereof, with an organic compound in which oxygen or sulphur is the donor atom. Specified substituted trithianes are the trimers of thioacetaldehyde, thioacetone, thiobenzaldehyde, thiobenzophenone and of thiomethylethylketone. The polymerization may take place in solution or in molten condition. The product may be stabilized by heating it to eliminate terminal oxymethylene units while a phenolic antioxidant together with an epoxy compound, or a carboxylic acid amide, an imide or an imine may be blended therewith with heating. A termonomer, e.g. 1,3-dioxalane or ethyleneoxide may also be present.
