Abstract

A process for the production of masterbatch material from a composition comprising a chain-saturated hydrocarbon copolymer having side chain ethylenic unsaturation and carbon black and/or a mineral filler, comprises subjecting the composition at a temperature of at least 93 DEG C. in the absence of heat treatment promoters to a shear treatment in which the degree and time of shear are sufficient to produce a decrease of at least 5% in the minimum value of the Mooney scorch curve at 121 DEG C. of a composition consisting of the copolymer 52% ethylene, 44% propylene, and 4% 1,4-hexadiene, all percentages being by weight, having a Mooney viscosity of 70, and 70-80 parts by weight of high abrasion furnace black per 100 parts by weight of copolymer. A list of suitable copolymers is given. In the examples, ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene copolymers are compounded with various carbon blacks, kaolin and magnesium silicate. The produced masterbatch material is vulcanized in the conventional manner using the usual additives including in some cases further carbon black or mineral fillers.
