Abstract
Thio-carbonic acid esters of the general formula <FORM:1023800/C2/1> in which R11 is a halogen atom or an alkyl, nitro, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, hydroxy, alkoxy or alkylmercapto radical, R12 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, which may be substituted by halogen, X is an oxygen or sulphur atom and n is zero or an integer of from 1 to 5, R11 being the same or different when n is 2 or more, may be prepared by reacting thiophenols with chloroformic acid esters or chloroformic acid thiol esters, or by reacting aryl thiolcarbonic acid ester chlorides with aliphatic hydroxyl or mercapto compounds. An acid-binding agent may be present. Numerous examples are given.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise at least one thio-carbonic acid ester of the general formula <FORM:1023800/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 stands for a halogen atom or an alkyl, nitro, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, hydroxy, alkoxy or alkylmercapto radical, R2 stands for an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, which may be substituted by chlorine, X denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom and n is zero or an integer of from 1 to 5, R1 being the same or different when n is 2 or more, but excluding compounds in which n is zero, and R2 is an alkyl radical containing 1-3 carbon atoms and in which n is 1, R1 is a halogen atom or a methyl radical and R2 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, in admixture with an organic solvent and an emulsifying agent and/or dispersing agent capable of producing a stable emulsion when diluted with water or in admixture with a solid diluent or carrier. The compositions may be in the form of emulsifiable concentrates, spray powders, pastes, soluble powders, dusts and granulates. Anionic and non-ionic emulsifiers are specified. The invention also comprises a method of eradicating weeds from area infested therewith comprising treating said area with at least one thio-carbonic acid ester of the general formula given above, to destroy weeds or germinating weed seeds.
