Abstract

Epoxide resins are cured by heating in the presence of a curing agent comprising a chemical complex of a polymerized monoepoxy compound and a boron trifluoride co-ordination compound or complex which has served to polymerize the epoxy compound. The epoxy compound may be epichlorohydrin, phenyl glycidyl ether, butyl glycidyl ether, other glycidyl ethers or esters, alkylene oxides or epoxidized hydrocarbons. The boron trifluoride compound may be formed from an ethylene glycol monoalkyl ether, ethylamine, benzylamine, N-ethylaniline, chloroaniline or dimethyl benzylamine, and it may be preformed or generated in situ. A hydroxy compound, e.g. ethanol, glycol, glycerol, hydroquinone or pentaerythritol, may be incorporated during the polymerization. In Examples 5, 6 and 8 an epoxy resin is present during the polymerization of the epoxy compound. The examples refer to the curing on "Epikote" (Registered Trade Mark) with the polymers produced.
