Abstract

Granules of a metal oxide which has cracking activity are (1) dried under conditions at least as severe as heating at 400 DEG C. for one hour, (2) treated at 100-600 DEG C. with the vapours of an organosilane of formula R1R2QYSi in which R1 and R2 are C1-C4 alkyl, Q is H or C1-C4 alkyl and Y is H, halogen or C1-C4 alkyl such that 1 litre of granules is contacted with 0,1-10 mols of organosilane and (3) cooled in an oxygen-free atmosphere. The granules may be Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-ZrO2.Al2O3-ZrO2 or Al2O3-MgO-SiO2. Surface areas of various granules are given.
