Abstract

1,023,604. Electrophotographic apparatus. AMERICAN PHOTOCOPY EQUIPMENT CO. April 21, 1964 [May 6, 1963], No. 16558/64. Heading G2H. In an electrostatic photocopying machine 10 in which a copy sheet is charged and exposed fresh developer powder comprising a magnetic carrier and toner particles, is fed by conveyer 111 from a magazine 110 at a controlled rate to bin 43 in the developer unit 30, and used powder is discharged from the bin at the same rate by device 112. Unit 30 is described in Specification 1,023,603 and has a rotating cylinder 60 of magnetic material to apply toner powder to the exposed copy sheet, a magnetic field being established normal to the cylinder by an adjacent pole piece 80 (to produce a "brush" effect). The toner consists of pigment particles adhering to magnetic carrier particles by triboelectric charging, the carrier particles remaining in bin 43 after the toner is deposited on the copy sheet. Contra-rotating augers 91,92 mix and circulate the developer powder and are motor-driven. Conveyer 111 consists of an augers 121 is geared to a toothed agitator wheel 124 carrying a paddle 126. Device 112 consists of another auger 131 rotating in tube 132 opening from bin 43, augers 121, 131 baths being driven by motor 127 in unison. The spent developer passes through chute 135 to receptacle 140 removably carried in tray 141. When receptacle 140 is full, its weight moves it downwards against the bias of spring 151 and switch 152 is actuated to provide an audible or visible warning. The developer may be packaged in containers such as receptacle 140. The rate of which developer is replenished is decided by the rate of copying, and motor 127 is controlled for this purpose by switch 195 through a cam 196 whose shaft 198 is driven by timing motor 201 running at 1 r.p.m. Motor 201 is controlled by switch 202 that senses the length of sheets entering the machine. The setting of cam 196 determines the duration of running of motor 127. As an alternative signalling system, a timer motor 205 may be used to operate light 208 through cam 206 and switch 207. The original and copy sheets 16, 17 are fed into slots 14, 15 face to face to charging unit 18 after which original 16 goes to illuminating station 21 and copy 17 goes to exposing station 22, light from source 23 being reflected by mirror and lens system 24 to the moving sheet 17. The original then returns to discharge chute 25 while copy 17 moves to developing unit 30 and then to a fixing unit as described in Specification 1,023,602.
