A stand for an electric hair dryer or a mercury quartz lamp has a tubular column 1 secured to a socket 2 having in a recess on the underside of a flange 3 a turntable 5 with three projections 9 to each of which a leg 10 journalled, the leg resting in a recess in flange 3 in the operative position, but when it is desired to fold the stand, turntable 5 is rotated about the longitudinal axis of the stand and the legs can then each be folded upwardly through a slot in the flange 3.
