Abstract

Cis- and trans-2,4,6-trichloro-2,4,6-triphenyltriphosphonitriles are prepared by effecting reaction between chlorine gas and phenylphosphorus dichloride in a suspension of finely-divided ammonium chloride in an inert liquid reaction medium at 60-150 DEG C. The reaction may be effected (a) by passing chlorine gas slowly into a suspension of the ammonium chloride in a solution of phenylphosphorus dichloride in the inert liquid or (b) by passing phenylphosphorus dichloride and chlorine gas simultaneously into the suspension of the ammonium chloride. Preferably, the ammonium chloride has an average particle size below 10 microns and may be prepared by passing gas streams of ammonia and hydrogen chloride into an inert liquid which is the same as that used in the preparation of the phosphonitrilic trimers. Suitable inert liquids are saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 6 to 10 carbon atoms aliphatic helogenated hydrocarbons which are not readily dehydrohalogenated and halogenated benzenes containing 1 to 3 halogen atoms. The cis- and trans-trimers may be recovered from the reaction mixture by filtering it to remove ammonium chloride, evaporating the filtrate to dryness and purifying the resulting product with a paraffin hydrocarbon containing 4 to 7 carbon atoms.
