Abstract

A composition comprising (1) water, (2) a water-soluble salt of (A) a polymer containing (i) from 1 to 5% by weight of carboxylic acid units derived from one or more of the following acids, namely: acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methacrylic acid dimer, maleic acid, itaconic acid, methacryloxy propionic acid and methacryloxy isobutyric acid, and (ii) ester units of the formula <FORM:1023281/C3/1> where R represents methyl or ethyl, the balance, if any, of the copolymer being constituted by compatible units as hereinbefore defined with (B). At least one of the following amines, viz. 2 - (dimethylamino) - ethanol, trimethylamine, triethylamine and 2-methyl-2-amino-propanol-1, and (3) a cosolvent coprising isopropanol, n-butanol, 2-ethyl hexanol, 2-butoxy ethanol, 2-butoxyethyl acetate, butoxyethoxyethyl acetate, ethoxyethoxyethyl acetate, isophorine or triethanolamine. The compositions may be mixed with ag. dispersions of water-insoluble vinyl or acrylic polymers, or with phenol-formaldehyde resins, aminoplasts such as urea-formaldehyde resins, melamineformaldehyde resins, ethylene urea-formaldehyde resins, alcohol modified aminoplasts and epoxy resins. Examples describe the copolymerization of ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/acrylamide/methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / b - hydroxypropyl methacrylate / methacrylic acid. The compositions obtained from these copolymers are mixed with an ag. solution of water-soluble methoxylated melamine-formaldehyde resin and titanium dioxide. Cross-linked polymers.-When the polymers are co-mixed with other resins such as aminoplasts and polyepoxide 3-20% of a comonomer enhancing cross-linking is incorporated. Several examples of such comonomers containing hydroxyl, amino, ureido, amide or epoxy groups are given.ALSO:Paper, leather, wood, metals, glass, ceramics, concrete, asbestos-cement products such as boards and shingles, textiles e.g. rugs, woven, nonwoven, or knitted fabrics are coated with a composition comprising (1) water, (2) a water-soluble salt of (A) a polymer containing (i) from 1-5% by weight of carboxylic acid units derived from one or more of the following acids, namely acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methacrylic acid dimer, maleic acid, itaconic acid, methacryloxypropionic acid and methacryloxy butyric acid and (ii) ester units of the formula <FORM:1023281/B1-B2/1> where R represents methyl or ethyl, the balance, if any, of the copolymer being constituted by compatible units (defined) with (B) at least one of the following amines viz. 2-(dimethylamino)-ethanol, trimethyl amine, triethyl amine and 2-methyl-2-aminopropanol-1, and (3) a co-solvent comprising isopropanol, n-butanol, 2-ethyl-hexanol, 2-butoxy ethanol, 2-butoxy ethyl acetate, butoxyethoxyethyl acetate, ethoxyethoxyethyl acetate, isophorone or triethanol amine. After application the coatings may be air dried or dried at a temperature of from 140-210 DEG F. To ensure maximum resistance to water the coatings may be subjected to a final curing by heating to elevated temperatures of 220-450 DEG F. The compositions may be mixed with aqueous dispersions of water insoluble vinyl polymers, or with phenol for maldehyde resins, amino-plasts such as ureaformaldehyde resins melamine-formaldehyde resins, ethylene urea-formaldehyde resins, alcohol modified amino-plasts, and epoxy resins. Examples relate to coating steel plate by spraying with a suction-type sray gun, air drying, followed by a final cure. Pigmented coating compositions containing rutile are also described.
