Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of mental disorders comprise an amitriptyline compound of the general formulae <FORM:1022654/A5-A6/1> together with a phenothiazine compound of the general formula <FORM:1022654/A5-A6/2> In both formulae, X and X1 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or a phenyl, amino, C1-4 alkyl, alkoxy, haloalkyl, acyl, haloacyl, haloacylamino, alkylsulphonylamino, haloalkoxy, haloalkylmercapto, alkylsulphonyl, haloalkyl sulphenyl, alkyl sulphamoyl, C2-4 alkenyl, di (C1-4 alkyl) amino, hydroxyl, cyano, carboxy, carbamyl, C1-4 alkyl carbamyl, alkylmercapto, sulphamoyl or di (C1-4 alkyl) sulphonoyl radical, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy radical, and each of R and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl, C2-4 alkenyl cycloalkyl, phenyl or benzyl radical or R and R1 are linked together to form a 1-piperidyl, 1-pyrrolidyl, 4-morpholinyl or 1-(C1-4 alkyl)-4-piperazinyl ring. They may be in conventional forms for oral administration e.g. tablets, capsules, suspensions and elixirs. The preferred form comprises amitriptyline and perphenazine.
