Abstract

Trioxan is polymerized under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an electrophilic catalyst with at least one N-vinyl or C-vinyl substituted derivative of a heterocyclic compound. Specified comonomers are N-vinyl carbazole, 2-vinyl pyridine, and 2-vinyl-1.3-dioxan. A third monomer may also be present, e.g. a cyclic ether, an aliphatic or alicyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon, an allyl ether and ester, and a compound containing one or more isocyanate or nitrile groups. Specified catalysts are metal and metalloidal fluorides, chlorides and bromides, their complexes with water and with organic compounds in which the donor atom is oxygen or sulphur, non-oxidizing inorganic acids and their complexes with boron trifluoride, complexes of boron trifluoride with weakly basic nitrogen compounds, halogens and interhalogen compounds and oxonium salts. The reaction preferably takes place in an inert liquid medium in a continuous manner at between - 100 DEG and 100 DEG C. The matter claimed in Specifications 998,479, 1,002,761 and 1,009,882 is disclaimed.
