Abstract

1,022,103. Microwave heating. DECCA Ltd. Sept. 9, 1963 [June 27, 1962], No. 24761/62. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] A closure 12 for a microwave cavity, e.g. a microwave oven 10, comprises a choking groove 15 arranged in a peripheral upstanding portion 13, 14 of the closure, the upstanding portion being intersected by grooves 16 which prevent resonance of the leakage energy. Such resonance may occur when the distance around the periphery is equal to a whole number of wavelengths and, to prevent this, grooves 16 are spaced less than a wavelength (e.g. half a wavelength) apart. As shown on the right-hand side of the Figures, the peripheral part 14 beyond the choking groove contacts the side of the oven 10. In this case the grooves 16 need only extend as far as the choking groove. Where the part 14 does not contact the oven (left-hand side of the Figures), the construction is modified by extending the grooves 16 through the part 14. The parts 13, 14 are dimensioned to present a quarter-wave path length to the leakage energy.
