Abstract

A fire-extinguishing powder comprises sodium and/or potassium bicarbonate of particle size below 251m , at least 50% being larger than 50m , and from 0.05% to 20% silica particles which are substantially spherical and have a particle size in the range 5 mm to 30m . The silica may be hydrophilic silica or a hydrophobic silica having a surface modified e.g. by the pressure of bonded methyl groups or of an adsorbed silicone or by treatment with a high melting point wax. An inert solid of particle size intermediate between that of the bicarbonate and silica, e.g. talc, BuSO4 or MgCO3, may also be present.
