Abstract
102,125. Carter, L. J. July 11, 1916. Theatrical appliances. - A theatrical appliance comprises means for producing the illusory effect of a large body of mounted troops or other mobile objects advancing towards the audience As shown in Fig. 1, successive groups A - - E of units are employed, the groups C, D, E being mounted on independent trollies. The first group A consists of painted figures 12 pivoted upon the bars of a drumlike frame 14, which may be rotated by suitable means, such as a belt 17. The figures are weighted so as to remain substantially vertical as the drum is rotated, thus producing the illusion of successive rows of cavalry men coming over the crest of a hill. The units of the second group B representing uniformed cavalry men are mounted so as to receive a succession of vertical reciprocations by means of motor-driven gearing, each row of units being out of time with the adjacent ones. In group C, the units consist of panels cut and painted to represent the head and upper part of a horse with a cavalry man astride thereof. The units are connected in pairs by horizontal rods so that a real person may stand between the units of each pair and support them by means of the rod, at the same time giving them the required oscillating movement. Group D consists of successive rows of lay figures 33 of horses, each figure having a vertical hole through the body to receive the body of a man, who, by standing on the platform 34, supports and moves the horse. A similar arrangement of man and lay figure is used in group E, but the horse is hinged to the framework by a link 37, Fig. 3. and the man standing on the platform 38 imparts the required oscillatory movement. The front legs 40 are hinged to the horse and also to the platform 38 to enhance the appearance of galloping. The recession of the ground relative to the troops is simulated by means of painted belts 41. 42 driven in any suitable manner.
