A catheter includes a distensible retention means 22 adjacent the tip 16, the retention means being connected through a passageway 14 in the catheter tube with a handpump 26 comprising a cylinder 28 and plunger 30, the plunger being reciprocable to move liquid between the cylinder and the retention means for distending or collapsing the retention means, and latching means 38, 42b for securing the plunger in its operative position in which the retention means is distended. The cylinder is permanently connected to the passageway by a coupling 32. The plunger is retained in inoperative position by a flange 30a engaging a shoulder 28a.
