Abstract
1,020,650. Blending solids. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Oct. 28, 1964 [Nov. 1, 1963], No. 43969/64. Heading B1C. Apparatus for equalizing the flow rates of streams of polyethylene granules and blending them comprises a vessel 11 having an inverted conical lower portion 11b and a coaxial conical baffle 20, the materials being supplied through a plurality of conduits 10 all of the same diameter and arranged symmetrically about and equidistant from the axis of the vessel and discharging into its top or upper part at the same horizontal level. There is an axial bottom discharge outlet 18. The conduits 10 must be straight for a distance at least three times their diameter and inclined to the horizontal at an angle greater than that of the angle of repose of the materials to be processed. The baffle 20 must be positioned so that the distance x is greater than the self-bridging distance of the materials and not more than half the radius of the baffle base, and so that the area of the annular opening between the baffle and the vessel is greater than that of the discharge opening but less than the sum of the crosssections of the inlet pipes. The baffle must also be positioned so that its base is not less than three inlet pipe diameters below their discharge ends and not less than 3x above the vessel discharge outlet. When the apparatus is "flooded" with material equal amounts of each stream will flow through it irrespective of the heads in the inlet pipes. The maximum rate of flow is achieved when the centres of the pipes 10 are in line with the centre line of the annular interspace between the baffle and the vessel. The baffle may be vertically adjustable as shown; it may have a notched or scalloped edge, and the inlet pipes may be vertical, see Fig. 3 (not shown). The materials may be recirculated.
