Abstract

1,020,235. Drinking vessels; serving dishes for food. N.F.C. ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 12, 1962 [Oct. 16, 1961], No. 38807/62. Heading A4A. [Also in Division F4] A double-walled insulated container, e.g. a serving dish or a tumbler, has inner and outer shells 6, 7 of plastics material and valve means 21, 22 on the shells that is normally closed and opens by flexing of the shells when the pressure in the interspace between the shells increases due to placing heated food in the dish or immersing the dish in hot washing-up water, so as to prevent permanent distortion of the shells. As shown the bottom 15 of the inner shell acts as a diaphragm and lifts valve member 21 off a valve seat 22 surrounding an aperture 12a in the bottom 8 of the outer shell when the air pressure between the shells increases. The interspace is filled with foam plastics 20 and the two shells are secured together by a snap fit at 14. Wire handles 25 are received in socket members 24 at opposite sides of the dish. The lid of the dish also comprises inner and outer plastics shells 28, 29 connected by a friction fit at 31 and filled with foam plastics. A lug 33 upstanding from the inner shell projects through an opening in the outer shell of sufficient size to constitute a permanent vent, and a knob 34 is screwed on to the lug. As applied to a double-walled plastic tumbler, Fig. 2 (not shown), the valve member 21 seats on the top of a tubular outlet projecting upwardly from the base of the outer shell. The inner shell has a depending peripheral flange at its upper end circumferentially serrated to engage serrations on the upper rim of the outer wall.
