Abstract

Acrylonitrile, or mixtures thereof with up to 20% of copolymerizable monomers, is polymerized by adding to a solution of monomer in dimethyl sulphoxide an amount of a water-soluble peroxy compound which does not exceed 0.5% of the weight of the monomer and is such that it is practically consumed at the end of polymerization or on reaching the desired viscosity of the polymer solution, adding a polymerization regulator in an amount that exceeds the amount of catalyst but is not more than double it, initiating polymerization by warming the monomer solution to temperatures above 50 DEG C. and allowing the temperature to rise by at least 5 DEG C. during the course of the reaction. Catalysts specified are hydrogen peroxide and alkali metal and ammonium persulphates, perborates and percarbonates. The catalysts may be activated, e.g. by sodium metabisulphite. Regulators specified are butyl, dodecyl and 3-ethoxypropyl mercaptans, thioacetic acid, thioglycolates, carbon tetrachloride and tetrabromide, chlorotribromomethane, ethyl tribromoacetate phenyl phosphine and diphenyl silane. The examples describe the preparation of polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with methyl acrylate and methacrylate.
