Abstract

1,020,008. Television; staircase waveform generators. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1962, No. 46154/62. Headings H3P and H4F. In a scanning system for a cathode-ray tube, a set of auxiliary pulses is produced at the time of each horizontal line, the pulses being counted by a chain 22 of bistable trigger circuits, the output of which is converted in a decoder 24 to a staircase vertical deflection waveform. If the line/frame ratio is not an exact multiple of the number of pulses in each set the system will interlace at a rate corresponding to the number of pulses per set. Interlacing.-The Specification refers to double, triple and quadruple interlaced rasters and describes a triple interlaced system having eleven frames/second (33 fields/second) and 761 lines/frame. A pulse P1 is generated at the start of each spaced sawtooth horizontal sweep at 16, a further pulse P2 at the end of each sweep and a third pulse P3 at the end of each flyback. Each pulse P1, P2, P3 advances the counter 22 by one unit until a count of 897 is reached when the counter is reset by the AND gate 26 and an amplifier 28. (897 - 136=the line/frame ratio, 761.) Staircase wave generators.-The triggers 22 are each connected to a digital/analogue converter (Fig. 5). Temperature-compensated resistor 44 connected to the tenth trigger T10 is arranged to pass one half of the maximum output current of the decoder 24 whilst the values of the other resistors 40, 42 &c. are weighted on a binary scale. Diodes 46, 48, 50 become non- conductive when the corresponding trigger is in its " 1 " state, diverting an appropriate current from the relevant diode 52, 54, 46 to the output terminal 58. The staircase waveform thus produced during each count is amplified at 12 and fed to vertical deflecting plates or coils on a cathode-ray tube 14.
