Abstract

1,019,861. Telegraphy; non-contact making relays. CREED & CO. Ltd. May 1, 1964, No. 18184/64. Headings H3B and H4P. The invention comprises a piezo-resistive device which is mechanically coupled to, but electrically isolated from, an electromagnetic means, whereby energization of the latter causes the resistance of the device to change. Several embodiments are described. In a first of these, Fig. 1, data pulses are applied to electromagnet 2, 3 causing corresponding movement of the armature 4 to which the piezo-resistive device 8 is coupled, so that 8 is strained. The consequent changes in the resistance are used to vary the current in a circuit controlling a teleprinter. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the received pulses are sampled by applying them to coil 18 of an electromagnet and clock pulses to coil 21, on the armature. The samples appear as resistance changes at terminals T2. The clock pulses are applied at high speed until a Start pulse is detected whereupon the clock slows to bit rate.
