Headings B3A, B3D, B3K and B3Q. [Also in Divisions B7, F1 and F2] A slotted sheet, e.g. of aluminium, forming the skin of a body immersed in a relatively flowing fluid, is formed by embossing ridges 12, Fig. 3, in the sheet by tools, one having ridges 1c and the other corresponding grooves 3. Each ridge is of a depth exceeding the thickness of the sheet, so that when it is milled, ground, or planed off, a slot 10, Fig. 4, is left having sloping sides 6. The sheet may be stiffened by webs 8 connecting the opposed sides of a slot. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the upper die or dies 1A may be guided by one or more arms 11 co-operating with vertical tracks 11a. The sheet may be laid over framework to produce an aircraft wing, fuselage, or nacelle, or a turbine or compressor blade, or may form a panel in the skin of a rail or road vehicle, ship, or jet propulsion engine pod. As an alternative to the tools 1c, a roller of suitable section may be used to press the sheet into the grooves 3 (Fig. 6, not shown). The ridges may be removed before or after forming of the sheet to its finished shape. The sheet may be inset into a solid turbine or compressor blades, so that the slots overlie channels in the blade. Fig. 7 shows a suitable hand-controlled milling machine comprising a cutter 25a between guide rollers 26, driven through gears 25d and shaft 25c by a motor (not shown) in one of the two handles 27 used to traverse the machine. Fig. 8 shows a suitable grinding or polishing machine, comprising an endless grinding or polishing belt 30b trained around rollers 30a, 32, 32a, of which one is driven. A fourth roller 30c on a spring- biased arm 30d tensions the belt. An adjustable member 31 applies the belt to the sheet, a member of appropriate configuration being used for each part of the sheet. Alternatively, the member may be elastically deformable so as to follow the shape of the sheet.
