Abstract

<PICT:1019329/C6-C7/1> In electrophoretic coating of an article which is moved through the coating bath by a conveyer from which it is supported by an insulator, the article being connected to one pole of a D.C. source and the bath container being connected to the other pole, the resistance of the insulator is measured and the article is moved through the coating bath only if the measured resistance exceeds a selected value. Typically a power driven chain conveyer 141 having earthed conveyer rails 23 supports by means of an insulator 25 and conducting hanger 21 an article 19 to be coated, electrical connection to the article for coating being made to the positive pole connected to the busbar beyond insulation segment 37 by a contact member 29 on the hanger 21. A device 147 for measuring and indicating the insulator resistance and adapted to stop the conveyer if the resistance is too low, comprises a rectifier bridge 191 fed by the secondary of a transformer 173 and a relay 195 connected across the bridge arms. Before the article enters the bath, if the resistance across the lines 143, 145 is too low, relay 195 closes contacts 169 energizing relay 165 which closes contacts 163 to light a signal lamp 161 and opens contacts 167 to stop the chain drive motor 137. If the power supply to the device 147 is broken, relay 157 which when energized holds contacts 159 closed causes the conveyer drive motor circuit to be opened and so stops the conveyer.
