Abstract

A suspension of a finely-divided solid in a liquid is flocculated by addition of an electrolyte and a polyelectrolyte, the liquid containing the flocs is subjected to a settling step, the settled flocs are separated from the liquid in a manner to compact the flocs together, and the compacted flocs are centrifuged. Apparatus for carrying out the process may comprise a vessel with stirrer for receiving suspension and (aqueous) reagents, a conical settling tank for receiving conditioned suspension, a densifier to receive settled solids, and a basket centrifuge to receive solids from the densifier. The densifier may be omitted; the settling tank may be omitted; two stirrer vessels may be used in series, electrolyte being added to the first and polyelectrolyte to the second; where a single stirrer vessel is used, the electrolyte may be added thereto, and the polyelectrolyte added during passage of the suspension from there to the settling tank. The electrolyte may be: calcium chloride, aluminium or magnesium sulphate, sodium hydroxide, or ammonium molybdate. The polyelectrolyte may be a polymer of acrylic acid, acrylamine or acrylamide. A cationic polyelectrolyte may be added to the suspension before or after an anionic polyelectrolyte. Suspensions of either bentonite or shale may be treated. ALSO:A suspension of a finely-divided solid in a liquid is flocculated by addition of an electrolyte and a polyelectrolyte, the liquid containing the flocs is subjected to a settling step, the settled flocs are separated from the liquid in a manner to compact the flocs together, and the compacted flocs are centrifuged. Apparatus for carrying out the process may comprise a conditioning vessel 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), to receive the suspension, and the reagents (in the form of aqueous solutions), and having a stirrer 2, a conical settling tank 3 to receive the conditioned suspension, a spiral rake densifier 5 to receive the settled solids, and a horizontal basket centrifuge 6 to receive the solids from the densifier. The densifier may be omitted, as in Fig. 3 (not shown). Two stirred conditioning vessels may be used in series, electrolyte being added to first and polyelectrolyte to the second; alternatively, the electrolyte may be added to the stirred suspension in a single conditioning vessel and thereafter the polyelectrolyte may be added to the suspension during its passage from there to the settling tank, as in Fig. 3 (not shown). As a further alternative the conical settling tank may be omitted and the settling carried out in the pool formed at the lower (entrance) end of the densifier. Bentonite suspension (in foundrysand reclamation), and shale suspension, or the tailings fraction resulting from the froth flotation of raw fine coal, may be treated.
